Firemans visit

Today we concluded our fire topic with a very exciting visit from two local firefighters!
Steve and Rob explained how we can keep ourselves safe.
They taught us that if there's a fire in our home we must:
        GET OUT!
            STAY OUT! and
                CALL THE FIRE BRIGADE OUT!

We learnt how important it is to plan and practise an escape route and how to crawl beneath the smoke.
We learnt about firemans kit and Rob and Steve dressed an enthusiastic new recruit!
Then we went out and saw the fire engine and all the equipment. We even had a go on the hoses! Mrs Rees's car has never been so clean!

We would like to thank Steve and Rob for a fun and informative morning and for the great job they do at Dorset Fire and Rescue service.

Gym festival

Yesterday afternoon we joined other schools for an 'Olympic dream gym festival' at Blandford Forum Gymnastics Club.
We were representing America and had worked hard on perfecting a rhythmic gymnastic sequence using ribbons, ropes and hoops. We enjoyed performing in front of the other schools and thought their sequences were amazing too.
We also had the opportunity to try out the apparatus and equipment at the gym. The trampolines and the air track were great fun!

Heat can change things!

We thought about how and why we need to heat things up. We looked at a potato but none of us fancied eating it....... and yet oven baked jacket potatoes are one of our favourites!
We took a piece of bread and we examined it, we felt it, smelt it and tasted it. Then we put it in a toaster and waited for it to heat up. It smelt lovely!
When the toast popped up it was no longer soft, flexible, spongey or white. It was quit different. Now it was hard and rigid, golden brown and crunchy.

Could it ever be changed back? No the change was irreversible!

Traditional tales.

In our literacy we are exploring traditional tales.
Our first story is a tale from India called 'Tiger Child'.
We are very proud of the way we worked in groups to sequence and retell the story.

Raising questions.

Who?      What?      When?      How?       Where?        Why?

This half term our topic is all about FIRE!
Here are some of the questions we want to find answers to.

Do all materials burn?  Do cars burn?
If fire makes light does light make fire?
How does fire spread?
How do firemen know where the fire are?
How do they stop fires?
What happened in the fire of London?
Was the fire of Blandford like the Fire of London?
